Week 6 Theme| Kindness Without Expectation

Years ago, I read an article that talked about being kind without expecting anything in return. That really got me to thinking, how many times did I do something kind without expecting so much as a thank you? Ever since then, it’s challenged me to check my intentions when being kind. I wanted to do kind things and be kind out of the goodness of my heart without letting expectations hamper it. Doing something kind usually makes you feel good even if that’s not your intention. Yet when I did something and didn’t get what I expected in return (a thank you for example), I was let down. The joy I wouldve received from kindness was overshadowed by the expectation I had inadvertently attached to it.

Let joy be the return of investment of the kindness you extend.

This week’s challenge focuses on not only choosing kindness but being kind without expectation. Kindness is something that should be given freely without restriction or expectation. How others respond is on them, but how we give kindness is on us. This is might be a big step to take on our journey of making kindness a bigger part of our lifestyle. You might find that you already do some things without expectation and others without realizing expectation was there. While it’s liberating to be kind without expectation, I do encourage you to remember to uphold your healthy boundaries. Remember the kindness we focused on during the first three weeks of the challenge. Being kind starts with yourself.  Don’t deplete yourself or do things that aren’t in alignment with yourself. I can’t wait to hear about how this week goes for you!

Here’s a beautiful short video that perfectly illustrates how kindness always returns the investment with interest!

Kindness Without Expectation Exercise-

Think of the times you expect something in return for the kindness you extend. It might be something small like hearing thank you or it might be hoping it’s reciprocated. How does it feel when you do something kind and don’t get what you expect in return? What do you receive by doing kind things or being kind even if you don’t expect it?

Take note of the times you’re kind without expectation this week. How did it feel? Did you end up getting something in return anyway?

If you sign up on the Kindness Ninja website, you’ll receive a list of lots of ways to be kind without expectation. This is a great way to incorporate kindness into your life on a regular basis. I personally enjoy doing this list with my kids.

If you can think of a different exercise to incorporate, feel free to do so. ❤

Reflection Prompt | You pick the day to post!

At the end of this week, post your reflection. How did it feel to focus on being kind without expectation?  How was your experience? What did you struggle with? What surprised you? What did you learn about yourself? Which exercise did you do? Did you find it difficult to do at the beginning of the week? Did it get easier as the week went on? How did people respond? Feel free to share as much as you’re comfortable with. You’d be surprised by how many of your readers will be able to relate to how you feel and who you might encourage.
